PFAS‑containing materials are currently used in several fuel cell components, yet the industry’s understanding of how these substances behave during manufacturing, operation, and end‑of‑life is still developing. Gaining clear, evidence‑based insight is essential for making informed decisions.

By engaging in this work, Intelligent Energy can help build a robust scientific foundation for the sector, ensuring that hydrogen technologies continue to advance without creating unintended environmental burdens. The project also supports long‑term innovation: identifying where PFAS are used, how emissions occur, and what alternatives or design changes could meaningfully reduce them. This knowledge will feed into a practical roadmap that guides material choices, product development, and future research.

Intelligent Energy’s role in UPeM focuses on generating high‑quality, real‑world data on PFAS behaviour in PEM fuel cell systems. The company will collaborate on developing robust sampling and measurement methods and undertake controlled testing on fuel cell stacks. Intelligent Energy will also help interpret results to identify the sources and mechanisms of PFAS release, assess potential mitigation options, and contribute to a practical roadmap for reducing emissions in future products.
