Organisation Introduction

The Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS is an application-focused, methodically oriented institute specializing in materials science and materials engineering, where microstructure is regarded as a decisive factor for the performance of materials, components, and complex systems. New material systems with tailored property profiles and advanced functionalities are made possible through the deep understanding and targeted modification of these microstructures. I. In this context, our work aims to identify defects and weak points at the micro- and nanoscale and analyze their causes. We also comprehensively characterize material properties and highlight their potential and performance for our customers.

Why UPeM?

Fraunhofer IMWS participates in the UPeM project because its objectives closely align with the institute’s focus on understanding the relationships between material composition, microstructure, and functional performance in hydrogen technologies. Within its activities on electrolysers and fuel cell systems, we are addressing questions related to material behavior, durability, and environmental compatibility of materials and components in hydrogen technologies. The UPeM project’s focus on the quantification PFAS emissions in such systems complements our approach by extending material analysis toward the identification and evaluation of potentially critical substances. By applying our expertise in analytical methods and microstructural characterization, Fraunhofer IMWS contributes to determining sources of emissions, assessing their impact, and supporting the development of improved material solutions. This participation aligns with our aim of generating comprehensive insights into material performance and environmental interactions, supporting the development of reliable and sustainable hydrogen technologies.

Involvement in UPeM?

Fraunhofer IMWS contributes to the project through advanced material diagnostics and analytical work on materials and components used in water electrolysers and fuel cell systems. The activities focus on developing and applying measurement and sampling approaches for PFAS detection, as well as performing detailed microstructural and chemical analyses of materials in different states, from pristine to aged. By combining microscopy, spectroscopy, and mass spectrometric techniques, the work supports the identification of PFAS distribution, release pathways, and their correlation with material degradation. In addition, experimental testing and evaluation methods are applied to link laboratory-based investigations with operating conditions, contributing to the validation of measurement procedures and to a better understanding of emission sources, pathways and material behavior.
