Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ
Organisation Introduction
UFZ is a world-leading institution in environmental research and a member of the Helmholtz Association, funded by the German Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. We pioneer innovative solutions to environmental challenges, contribute to a livable, resilient planet, and work towards a sustainable and just future for current and future generations.
Why UPeM?
Our group at UFZ is studying the environmental exposure to organic micropollutants and fosters the development of solutions to reduce environmental pollution. In this context PFAS are on our research agenda since more than a decade. UPeM gives us the opportunity to apply our expertise to learn about PFAS emissions from a previously unrecognized source and to elucidate transformation processes of fluoropolymers and the products formed.
Involvement in UPeM?
Together with the partners UFZ with its analytical and chemical expertise will be involved in quantifying the release of known PFAS and in detecting and identifying PFAS degradation products formed from PEMs in fuel cells and water electrolyzers. These activities contribute to ensuring a sustainable future energy supply with minimized environmental burden.

“With our contribution to UPeM we develop our profile as an environmental research institute that collaborates to explore critical environmental issues and to develop solution supporting a sustainable economy.”
